Chapter Seven

Cora

When we pull into my parents’ driveway, my heart sinks. I’ve obviously lost my mind. Who screws the guy they just met, then takes him home for Christmas? Maybe I am the shit show my family thinks I am.

“You didn’t tell me your parents were the Rockefellers,” Yule says, parking in a space just right of the driveway.

I shake my head. “Trust me, they aren’t nearly as refined as the house might suggest.”

“What do they do?”

“They’re both retired accountants.”

He narrows his eyes and ducks to check out the luxury ranch estate that sits on nearly sixty acres. “Accountants who sell drugs maybe, but there’s no way two accountants bought this place.”

I laugh, “Close. Accountants who won a lawsuit over a wet floor fall injury at the grocery store. Don’t worry though, it was total bullshit. They’re fine.”

Yule cracks open his door, lingering on my face. “Challenge accepted.”

I shake my head and smile. At the very least, Christmas will be interesting.

Yule steps from the truck and begins pulling gifts and luggage from the back.

We haven’t been outside for a minute before my mom is hollering from the front porch.

“Who is that Cora? You didn’t tell me you were bringing someone.”

Yule pulls down the last bag and looks at me with a wide grin. He really looks pumped. “Let’s do this!”

I shake my head and grab hold of the last bag, letting the roller do the work as I wheel towards my mom. The closer I get, the more my stomach turns. She’s dressed in a short party dress that shows nearly every curve and lump she has.

“And who is this, Ms. Cora Jane?” She trollops down the stairs and greets Yule with a squeeze. The woman is nearly sixty but carries herself like she’s a twenty-two-year-old headed to the club for the night. I have an urge to remind her that it’s Christmas, that maybe she could’ve worn a sweater, or a coat, or anything other than a skintight red dress and six-inch heels.

“Mom, this is Yule. Yule, my mother Nancy.”

She lingers on Yules muscles but talks to me. “Cora, it isn’t like you to bring someone home without calling first, or at all really.” There’s skepticism in her tone, like she knows I’m full of it.

Yule straightens, steps away from my mother, and gathers at my side, gripping my hip. “I’m sorry Nancy. I was planning to go to Russia with my family for Christmas, but I couldn’t bear leaving my sweet Cora. So, I canceled the flight last minute. I hope that’s okay.” Yule looks down at me with a softness. He lied pretty smoothly there for a guy who touts how honest he is.

My mother raises her brows. “This is going to be awkward then.” She pauses. “Greg called last week. He misses you, and he’s really turned his life around.”

I roll my eyes. “Okay. Well, that’s over Mom. So—”

Her voice lowers, and an odd sympathetic tone takes over, as though she knows she’s made a mistake. “I wasn’t expecting you to show up with someone, and well…”

My stomach free falls.
